Hofstede model logo

Our Hofstede model consists of six autonomous dimensions and two semi-autonomous dimensions.

  • D1, Means oriented versus goal oriented
  • D2, Internally driven versus externally driven
  • D3, Easy-going versus strict work discipline
  • D4, Local versus professional
  • D5, Open systems versus closed systems
  • D6, Employee oriented versus work oriented
  • D7: Degree of acceptance of leadership style
  • D8: Degree of identification with your organization

Based on the Hofstede model we cover around 200 additional topics, such as the degree to which the culture supports or hinders:

  • Absenteism
  • Communication
  • Corruption
  • Co-operation between work units, departments or function groups
  • Efficiency
  • Innovation
  • Productivity
  • Result driven
  • Safety

The research of Hofstede has shown that all these additional topics are not autonomous. These topics are called sub-dimensions. A sub-dimension consists of a combination of two or more of the eight dimensions of our model with different weighting factors. Below, two examples are shown:

  1. Scores on the the sub-dimension, "open versus closed communication", will be defined by the scores on D5, "open versus closed systems". A second dimension that co-defines the scores on this sub-dimension, but to a lesser extent, is D1, "means versus goal oriented".
  2. Scores on the sub-dimension, "procedures versus results driven", is defined by two autonomous dimensions:
    • D1: "means versus goal oriented", which can be called the internal aspect of this sub-dimension.
    • D2: "internally versus externally driven", which can be called the external aspect of this sub-dimension
